Now we slowly cross into the philosophy of "What is life" and the morals surrounding how to deal with semi-living creatures. Some people argue anything that can think for itself is living. Would that make animals not living? Some argue only those that can care for themselves are living. Does that make mentally disabled people non-living? Some people say that you require a beating heart to be living. Does that make most plants non-living? What about bacteria? And some small sea-life?

Then you could say only things with a soul are living. That's sort of a "catchall" without any merit. What has a soul? Whatever I say has a soul. Is there any way to prove it? Just ask me if it has a soul or not. Would a robot have a soul, if it was sapient and could move and maintain itself? What if it could communicate, understand, learn and create? At what point is the line between a human, of course running off basic instinct, human nature, and a need to survive, with all the hormones related to each, and a robot, programmed not to do this, not to do that, but still with enough leeway to do its own "thing", in such the way that human nature stops us when we look at a busy road and think "Huh. I could totally just rip all my clothes off and run across, to see if I make it."

Of course you're not going to do that. You say you could, but really you couldn't. Or rather, you wouldn't. When it comes to sentience and philosophy, "Wont" and "Cant" are very similar things. Lets say we programmed a robot to act just like a human, and make it out of human bits. Flesh, heart, muscles, nerves, etc. then make it so it has a need to breed, survive, thrive, communicate, travel, build and belong. Make a few thousand of them and throw them all on a planet together, wait for them to build a civilization, with all the religion, culture, language and bunk that comes with that.

At that final point - would they have a soul? Would they believe they themselves have a soul?

Then you ask yourself...What is a soul?

Nothing really.

I guess this convinced me that meat robuts won't have souls.

I'm ashamed to confess I had never heard of, let alone heard, Forever Changes till day before yesterday. I have since listened to it a few times--it turns out I have heard a couple of the songs over the years without knowing who did them--and it is most wonderful. It makes me very sad that I've missed out on so many years of knowing about it.

I also just listened to Pet Sounds for the first time all the way through (of course I was already familiar with tons of songs on it), and I think Forever Changes is oh so much the better record. And, lordy, are its lyrics so much more interesting and so much broader. No comparison.

Pet Sounds is indeed kind of dull. Check out Four Sail. It has these gems on it:

If it wasn't for the "snot" line Forever Changes would be an A+. I'm not a huge fan of string arrangements, but I love them on this record. It wasn't until I listened to it on cd that I realized there are only two songs that have electric guitar on them. I never really thought it was a folk album until then.
