I suppose it's not because they're making Dr. Who female as much as the reasons for doing it.

There's no clear reason within Whovian canon to do it.

The Master doesn't count, because that's a recent invention.

So why do it?

Anyways, I didn't even finish out the Matt Smith era (and haven't seen a single Capaldi episode) so who cares what I think.

I already signed out.

I hated the romance that RTD brought to Who. I hate that they have to bring sex into it at all.

I think this happens with all the reboots of late.

People who grew up loving X take it over, and then try and make it for themselves as adults.

They forget that these are, at the end of the day, kid's shows.

The recent Muppet reboot did the same thing.

It took the innocent Muppets and mixed it with TMZ.

Yuck.

There's plenty of adult sci-fi.

Why fuck up Doctor Who, which at the end of the day was nothing but weird sci-fi Romanticism?

I agree completely about the sex nonsense. Companions in old Who occasionally had crushes on the Doctor (most notably, Sarah Jane Smith), but it wouldn't have occurred to him even to notice, much less to reciprocate.

And, yes, the reasons for choosing a female Doctor are dumb, but there doesn't seem to be any reason a Time Lord might not choose to be a Time Lady for one incarnation or another.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge would have been a good Doctor and the best, I think, of all the candidates for the thirteenth incarnation. She's awkward and funny and smart and can switch between being charming and being unlikable in a flash (I think it's important for the Doctor to be at least a little unpleasant). I have never seen Jodie Whittaker play funny or charming or indeed particularly intelligent, except maybe in one early, early role.

I still haven't returned to it. I've thought about it but not had the gumption.

For perspective, know that at the moment I'm watching a reboot of a British game show from the early nineties and probably will turn next to the original. (A dumb game show, mind; nothing like Mastermind and its ilk.) This is the kind of thing for which I have the strength these days.

On the other hand, I did made a delightful pie and some cherry ice cream the other day, so I'm not totally useless.

"Taskmaster is a forthcoming American comedy panel game show, originally created by British comedian Alex Horne during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2010, transferred to UK television on Dave in 2015, and later adapted for American television on Comedy Central in 2017."

There's a new two-part TV adaptation of WAKE IN FRIGHT. I wonder how it'll measure up to the 1971 movie.

Maybe they'll turn it into a romcom?
